Dhaka: The Local Government Division (LGD) is currently awaiting the decision of the court concerning the administration of the oath for Ishraque Hossain as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the issue remains ‘sub-judice’ as it is under the consideration of the apex court. The LGD issued a statement today clarifying that a leave-to-appeal filed on May 26 with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court by a citizen challenges the High Court (HC) verdict from May 22. This verdict had cleared the way for Ishraque to take oath as DSCC mayor by rejecting a petition. The matter is now pending with the highest court, and the LGD is awaiting the court’s verdict before proceeding with the oath administration.
The statement also revealed that the LGD had initially prepared to administer the oath to Ishraque Hossain following the HC’s decision on May 22. However, complications arose when Ishraque filed a writ petition on May 25 through his lawyer, seeking to take the oath as DSCC mayor. The LGD is closely monitoring the legal proceedings and will proceed based on the court’s final decision.
