Sylhet: Home Adviser Lt Gen (Rtd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury emphasized that the primary objective of the interim government is to ensure a smooth transfer of power to an elected government through a free, fair, and neutral election. He highlighted the crucial role of the citizens in facilitating a peaceful electoral process.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Jahangir made these remarks during a view exchange meeting held at the Sylhet Deputy Commissioner's conference room. He stressed the importance of coordination between the field administration and law enforcement agencies in organizing the upcoming election transparently and peacefully. Jahangir pointed out that the Election Commission's preparedness alone is insufficient, underscoring the necessity for comprehensive preparations by the field administration and law enforcement.
He further elaborated that it is essential for the administration and law enforcement agencies to work collaboratively to create an environment where voters can exercise their rights without fear. He asserted that successful elections require collective effort and impartiality from all parties involved.
Jahangir also addressed the transparency in appointments within law enforcement agencies, noting improvements in the process. He urged officials to perform their duties without bias. Additionally, he identified drug abuse as a significant threat to national security and directed law enforcement to adopt a 'zero tolerance' stance against drug dealers.
During the meeting, officials discussed the law and order situation in Sylhet, with Jahangir pledging to address the challenges presented. His visit also included the Sylhet Sector Headquarters of BGB and the Sylhet Police Line.
Jahangir, who also serves as the Agriculture Adviser, highlighted agriculture's vital role in the national economy. He advocated for fair pricing for farmers and called for the cultivation of unused agricultural lands to bolster food security.
