Dhaka: A local leader of the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning after being shot in a gun attack in Palash upazila of Narsingdi. The attack, allegedly carried out by a rival group, occurred nine days prior and left Ibrahim Al Masum, among others, injured. Masum, who was previously the joint secretary of the Danga union unit of JCD, passed away at a hospital in Dhaka at approximately 9:00 am.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the incident took place on August 1, when a group, allegedly from a rival faction, attacked Masum and others in the Fakir Bari area. The confrontation was reportedly over establishing control in the region. Alongside Masum, nine other individuals sustained injuries during the attack.
Eyewitnesses reported that Masum, along with Mamun, Zainal, and several others, were present at a grocery shop when the attack unfolded. The assailants, identified as Bijoy, Sabuj, Iqbal, and Sani, opened fire on the group. When bystanders attempted to intervene, the attackers indiscriminately assaulted them, resulting in additional injuries, including to Danga union unit Jubo Dal President Mamun Ahmed and General Secretary Zainal Abedin.
All injured parties were transported to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. Masum was later moved to a private hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Officer-in-Charge of Palash Police Station, Shahed Al Mamun, confirmed that a case was filed on August 4 by Masum’s brother-in-law, Hasan Md Mohsin, against 37 individuals connected to the attack. “Police operations are underway to arrest those involved,” he stated.
