Napier: In-form New Zealand batsman Daryl Mitchell will miss the rest of the one-day international series against the West Indies, coach Rob Walter announced Tuesday. Mitchell, who was instrumental in New Zealand’s victory in the first match of the series, is sidelined due to a minor groin tear sustained during the game.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mitchell’s impressive innings of 119 runs secured a win for New Zealand in the opening match of the three-game series against the West Indies. Despite the injury setback, Mitchell is anticipated to recover in time for the upcoming three-Test series against the West Indies, which begins in Christchurch on December 2.
Walter expressed his disappointment over the loss of Mitchell, stating, “It’s always tough being ruled out of a series early on with injury, particularly when you’re in hot form like Daryl is.” Mitchell had been a key player in the ODI format, having scored two unbeaten fifties in the recent 3-0 series win against England.
To fill the gap left by Mitchell’s absence, batsman Henry Nicholls has been called up to join the squad. The team is set to play the second ODI in Napier on Wednesday, followed by the third match in Hamilton on Saturday.
