Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today highlighted the essence of objective, truth, and data-based information in journalism, asserting that opinions, assumptions, or activism do not constitute true journalism. He made these remarks during a panel discussion at the 'Bengal Delta Conference-2026'.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the conference was organized by the Dacca Institute of Research and Analytics (DAIRA) at a city hotel. The panel discussion, titled 'Does South Asian Media Face The Same Threats In Different Forms?', featured prominent speakers such as Kanak Mani Dixit, founding editor of Himal South Asian, Shafiqul Alam, former press secretary to the chief adviser and editor of Waadaa, and Suhasini Haider, diplomatic editor of The Hindu. The session was moderated by Nazmul Ahsan, executive editor of Netra News.
Minister Swapon emphasized the critical role of journalists in portraying events objectively to maintain professionalism. He noted that the media in South Asian countries like Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan face similar challenges. In today's era of technology and mobile journalism, the main responsibility of the media is to protect the public from confusion by preventing the spread of fake information and misinformation.
Swapon further remarked that there is no single definition of journalism, acknowledging its divided nature in contemporary society. He stressed that journalists must rise above emotions or personal views to reveal the truth, as their primary duty is to base reporting on data. He reiterated that without data or specific information, a concept cannot be considered newsworthy.
Shafiqul Alam noted the increased division within society and newsrooms in the digital era compared to the print era. He mentioned the ongoing struggle journalists face for survival and loyalty, and how, unlike in the 80s and 90s when media control was exerted through newspaper shutdowns or censorship, current influences include privileges and temptations. Alam also pointed out the shift towards video-based digital media as text-based journalism declines.
Suhasini Haider outlined the responsibilities of journalists, emphasizing that they should not act as government spokespersons, activists, or entertainers. She stressed that journalism's primary role is to inform and make people aware. Haider also observed a decrease in regional communication and understanding in South Asia in recent years.
In another event, Minister Swapon participated as the chief guest at the 'Global Conference on AI Leadership and Flagship Prestige Awards 2026' held at a different city hotel. He underscored the need for Bangladesh to embrace technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to enhance performance and efficiency. The conference brought together technology experts, policymakers, researchers, and academics who discussed AI, digital leadership, good governance, cybersecurity, and global cooperation. The event also honored individuals for their contributions to AI technology.
