Dhaka: The 56th Independence and National Day was observed across Bangladesh today with respect and solemnity, marking the historic struggle for liberation. The day commemorates the armed struggle that began on March 26, 1971, following the brutal crackdown on March 25, known as the ‘Black Night.’ After a nine-month War of Liberation, Bangladesh achieved its cherished independence on December 16, 1971.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, districts across the nation organized elaborate programmes to honor the day. In Tangail, the observance began with a 31-gun salute at sunrise, followed by the hoisting of the national flag. Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque led the wreath-laying ceremony at the martyrs’ memorial, which was attended by various officials and community representatives. The district hosted a series of events, including a parade and special prayers, to honor the sacrifices of the martyrs.
In Bogura, the day was marked with patriotic spirit and colorful programmes. Deputy Commissioner Md. Taufiqur Rahman laid wreaths at the Fulbari Memorial, and later hoisted the national flag at Shaheed Chandu Stadium. A vibrant parade featured contingents from various services and educational institutions, celebrating the spirit of independence. The Deputy Commissioner emphasized the importance of safeguarding the values of independence, urging the youth to uphold patriotism.
Netrakona observed the day with reverence, starting with a ceremonial 31-gun salute and wreath-laying ceremonies at key memorials. The district administration organized various events, including a rally and parade, honoring freedom fighters and sharing the spirit of the day with community members through food distributions and cultural programs.
In Jashore, the day commenced with a 21-gun salute and flag-hoisting ceremonies across the district. Floral tributes were paid at the Victory memorial by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashek Hasan and other officials. Various organizations and educational institutions participated in the commemorations, reflecting the collective respect for the nation’s history.
Mymensingh celebrated the day with a 31-gun salute and tributes at the Jut Gudam Liberation War Memorial. The district hosted a parade and various events to honor the martyrs and freedom fighters, emphasizing the importance of independence and unity.
In addition to these districts, the 56th Independence and National Day was also observed in Shariatpur, Sherpur, Kishoreganj, Feni, Munshiganj, and numerous other districts, where communities came together to commemorate the historic occasion with due respect and activities aimed at remembering the sacrifices and achievements of the Liberation War.
