Dhaka: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 today set June 7 for holding a hearing on charge framing in a case filed over the alleged staged raid by law enforcers at a building named ‘Jahajbari’ in the city’s Kalyanpur in 2016 that left nine people dead. The first tribunal, headed by Justice Md Golam Martuza Majumder, passed the order this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the ICT-1 had earlier directed the publication of notices in two national dailies on February 22, asking six fugitive accused, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, to surrender in the case. The tribunal had previously issued arrest warrants against these six individuals on January 29. The accused include Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Sheikh Muhammad Maruf Hasan, Monirul Islam, Krishna Podo Roy, and Abdul Baten.
The tribunal’s order followed the formal charges filed against eight individuals, which the ICT prosecution submitted with the registrar’s office on January 29. In a separate development, on March 24, 2025, ICT-1 showed former Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque and former commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Asaduzzaman Miah as arrested in the case.
According to the prosecution, the incident in question involved a raid by members of different units of the DMP and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on a house known locally as Jahajbari in Kalyanpur, Dhaka, on July 26, 2016. Allegations soon emerged claiming that the raid was staged and that the nine individuals who were killed had no links to militancy, contrary to claims that they were militants. It was also alleged that these individuals had been in police custody for a prolonged period before being shot dead at close range.
In response to the incident, then IGP AKM Shahidul Haque visited the scene and asserted that the deceased were members of the banned militant outfit Neo-Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo-JMB).
