Dhaka: Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman today announced that individuals convicted by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for crimes against humanity during the July mass uprising will not be permitted to participate in upcoming elections. This declaration was made during a debate competition held at the Film Development Corporation (FDC) in Tejgaon, which focused on implementing the spirit of the July mass uprising.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Attorney General Asaduzzaman emphasized that the tribunal possesses the authority to prosecute organizations implicated in crimes against humanity. He specifically mentioned that the Awami League, identified as a banned entity, is under scrutiny. Individuals with direct or indirect links to this organization will face justice, he asserted.
The Attorney General also criticized members of civil society, including university professors, legal professionals, and journalists, for their continued support of what he described as the “fallen fascist Awami League government.” He accused them of playing a significant role in turning Bangladesh into a fascist state alongside the former government.
Asaduzzaman suggested that a national consensus among political parties could be achieved through dialogue, but noted that all political parties currently stand united against what he termed as fascism.
The debate competition, presided over by Hassan Ahamed Chowdhury Kiron, Chairman and Founder of Debate for Democracy (DFD), concluded with Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University emerging victorious against Daffodil International University.
