Dhaka: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 today took into cognizance the formal charge filed in a case over the brutal killing of Shaikh Ashhabul Yamin in Savar during the 2024 July Mass Uprising.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the second tribunal, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, passed the order and issued arrest warrants against 13 of the total 19 accused in the case. It also instructed that the remaining six accused be produced before the tribunal on August 25.

The individuals accused in this case include former additional superintendent of police (Crime and Ops) of Dhaka district Md Abdullahil Kafi, former lawmaker of Dhaka-16 constituency Saiful Islam, former deputy inspector general (DIG) of Dhaka Range Syed Nurul Islam, former superintendent of police Asaduzzaman Ripon, and former additional superintendent of police (Savar Circle) Md Shahidul Islam. Other notable accused are former officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar Police Station Shahjaman, former officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station AFM Sayed, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mohammad Ali, and several others including Nayek Suhel Mia, Constable Mahfuz Mia, and former Savar upazila chairman Manjurul Alam Rajib.

The incident that led to the charges involved police dragging a wounded Yamin, a fourth-year Computer Science and Engineering student at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in Dhaka, from a police APC in the Savar Bank Colony area on July 18. His body was dropped on the street in a manner likened to a sack of rice, with the shocking footage quickly spreading across social media platforms.

Yamin, still alive at the time, was thrown across the road divider and left to succumb to his injuries. He was taken to various hospitals where he was allegedly denied treatment and was ultimately taken to a police station where he was reportedly tortured to death.
