Dhaka: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB) has called on the government to maintain confidence in Chartered Accountants (CAs) for conducting statutory audits. This appeal was made during a press conference titled ‘Safeguarding Audit for National Interest: Local and Global Perspective’ hosted at the CA building in the city.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, ICAB President Maria Howlader emphasized the Institute’s active role in supporting government initiatives beyond its regulatory functions. ICAB contributes through various policy proposals, such as those related to the budget submitted to the National Board of Revenue (NBR), and offers input on the development of rules and regulations for the Financial Reporting Council (FRC).
Furthermore, ICAB aids in drafting essential legislation and regulations concerning industrial policy, import-export policy, and foreign investment policy. Maria Howlader highlighted that this year marks ICAB’s 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades of commitment to regulating the accounting and auditing profession in Bangladesh.
Established on January 6, 1973, under the Bangladesh Chartered Accountants Order, 1973 (President’s Order No. 2, 1973), ICAB has consistently adhered to high standards, significantly boosting the nation’s financial landscape and international reputation. The Institute’s curriculum and examination system are acknowledged as equivalent to those of the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), she noted.
The press conference also featured speeches from past ICAB presidents Md. Humayun Kabir, Md. Moniruzzaman, and Md. Shahadat Hossain, who reiterated the Institute’s ongoing dedication to excellence in the accounting and auditing fields.
