Husband Receives Life Sentence for Wife’s Murder in Tangail

Tangail: A court here today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife in Sakhipur upazila of the district in 2025. Senior District and Sessions Judge Md Hafizur Rahman pronounced the verdict at noon in presence of the convict.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the convict was Md Mehedi Hasan, 38, son of Haider Ali of Atiapara area in Ichhadighi village under Sakhipur upazila. The court also fined him Taka 50,000, in default, to suffer one more year in jail.



Public Prosecutor of the court Md Shafiqul Islam Ripon stated that Mehedi had been addicted to online gambling for a long time and frequently tortured his wife, Kakoli, over gambling money and family issues.



On the morning of August 3, 2025, as part of the ongoing abuse, Mehedi took a knife hidden under the bed and stabbed Kakoli in the back. Locals rescued her and took her to Sakhipur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.



Following the incident, Kakoli’s brother, Md Badal Mia, filed a murder case with Sakhipur Police Station. After an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the court. A total of 13 witnesses testified in the case.
