Chittagong: A human chain was formed at Chittagong University today protesting the attack on Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) Cafeteria and Library Affairs Secretary Masum Billah demanding exemplary punishment for those involved in the incident.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the demonstration took place in front of the university’s administrative building, where participants displayed placards calling for the arrest and punishment of the attackers. The event was moderated by CUCSU Liberation War and Democratic Movement Affairs Secretary Monayem Sharif, and included speeches by CUCSU Vice-President (VP) Ibrahim Hossain Roni, CUCSU Joint General Secretary Ayobur Rahman Towfick, CUCSU Law and Human Rights Affairs Secretary Fazle Rabbi Tawhid, Sohrawardy Hall Students’ Union Vice-President (VP) Niamat Ullah Abrar Farabi, and CUCSU Deputy Office Secretary Jannatul Adn Nusrat.
CUCSU VP Ibrahim Hossain Roni addressed the gathering, highlighting past incidents of violence on campus. He urged university authorities to identify and prosecute the attackers within 24 hours, warning of potential tougher actions if their demands are not met. The urgency of ensuring campus safety was emphasized, especially in light of previous attacks injuring students, teachers, and employees.
CUCSU Joint General Secretary Ayobur Rahman Towfick described the attack on Masum Billah as part of a recurring pattern of violence against students by outsiders, stressing the need for a broader student movement to ensure a safer campus environment.
Fazle Rabbi Tawhid, CUCSU Law and Human Rights Affairs Secretary, criticized the administration’s handling of past offenders, arguing that leniency has only encouraged further attacks. He called for the immediate prosecution of those responsible for the latest incident.
In a related development, Hasibul Hasan, Masum Billah’s nephew and a student at the university, filed a case at Hathazari Model Police Station. The prime accused, Md Ariful Islam, was named in the complaint. Police swiftly acted, arresting Delwar Hossain Munna from Hathazari area. Officer-in-Charge Md Jahidur Rahman confirmed the arrest and stated that the suspect has been sent to court.
