Dhaka: A court here today convicted and sentenced house help Surovi Akter to death in a case filed over the brutal murder of housewife Afroza Begum and domestic worker Diti in the capital’s Dhanmondi area in 2019. Tawhida Akter, Judge of the 7th Additional Sessions Court in Dhaka, delivered the verdict this afternoon. The court also acquitted another house help, Bacchu Miah, in the case.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Afroza Begum resided in a fourth-floor flat of an apartment named Lobelia House in Dhanmondi, while her daughter, Dilruba Sultana Ruba, lived on the fifth floor of the same building. On November 1, 2019, the throat-slit bodies of Afroza Begum, 65, and Diti, 18, were discovered in Afroza’s flat.

The case was filed by Dilruba Sultana Ruba on November 3, 2019, with Dhanmondi Police Station. Following the investigation, police submitted the charge sheet against Surovi and Bacchu on February 1, 2022. Charges were framed against the duo on October 11 the same year.

Throughout the trial, a total of 23 witnesses testified on different hearing dates, providing evidence that ultimately led to today’s verdict.
