Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that the government will meet the reasonable demands of the police, taking into account the nation's financial capacity and resources. The objective is to develop a more modern and public welfare-oriented police force. "We will fulfill the logical demands of Bangladesh Police," he stated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ahmed made these comments while attending the 'Prime Minister's Special Welfare Meeting' as a special guest during Police Week 2026 at the Rajarbagh Police Auditorium in the capital. The event was graced by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman as the chief guest, with Senior Secretary of the Home Ministry Manzur Morshed Chowdhury and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir also addressing the gathering.
The Home Minister highlighted the issue of many constables retiring after 40 years of service without promotions. To tackle this, the government is considering a special policy for honorary promotions at retirement based on service records. This proposal includes promoting constables to honorary Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), ASIs to honorary Sub-Inspector (SI), and SIs to honorary Inspector ranks.
He further mentioned that a special policy framework is being developed to provide overtime allowances to police personnel from constable to inspector level who work beyond regular hours. "The initiative is expected to boost morale and improve service quality," he noted.
Addressing the physical and mental strain on police due to extended working hours, the minister announced plans to upgrade central and divisional police hospitals with modern facilities. Additionally, the government plans to establish more advanced hospitals following necessary assessments.
Ahmed also assured that the government is committed to solving accommodation shortages and improving infrastructure for various police units through land acquisition and the allocation of necessary funds.
Referring to improvements in the law and order situation over the past two months, Ahmed noted that special operations are ongoing against known terrorists, extortionists, and drug traffickers. He emphasized the importance of modern training and technological expertise for police personnel to combat emerging crimes such as cybercrime, online gambling, and money laundering. A committee has already been established to propose updated laws to address these offenses.
He concluded by stating that existing laws would be amended and updated to curb mob violence and ensure effective law enforcement in line with public expectations.
