Rupganj: Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has emphasized the critical need for specialized training in earthquake preparedness and highlighted the essential role of volunteers in national service and disaster response. "Volunteers are embracing the spirit of speed, service, and sacrifice in national service and disaster response," he stated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Adviser made these remarks during the inauguration of the International Volunteer Day 2025 program, organized by the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) at its Multipurpose Training Ground in Rupganj, Narayanganj. He praised the Fire Service as a vital institution, often seen as the country's ally during crises. Jahangir noted that trained volunteers frequently collaborate with firefighters during major fires, earthquakes, and disaster operations, often risking their lives without seeking personal gain.
The importance of volunteer support during large emergencies was underscored by Jahangir, who stressed continuous investment in volunteer development. This includes regular refresher training, motivational programs, public engagement events, and national day observances to enhance community-based disaster response. Highlighting the significance of International Volunteer Day, first celebrated in 1985, the Adviser emphasized its role in promoting global volunteer engagement.
He also congratulated Bangladeshi volunteers for their unwavering commitment to humanitarian service. The Home Adviser mentioned that the FSCD is progressing toward forming a nationwide volunteer force of 62,000 members, with over 55,000 already trained. He called for ongoing collaboration between volunteers and the FSCD for the nation's greater good.
In a solemn tribute, the Home Adviser honored the martyrs of the Liberation War and those who sacrificed their lives during the July-August 2024 Mass Uprising. He reiterated the interim government's dedication to creating a non-discriminatory, just, and inclusive Bangladesh, a vision strengthened by the sacrifices made during that pivotal movement.
