Rajshahi: The holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), a grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), was observed here today with due religious fervor and zeal as elsewhere in the country. Today marks the 10th day of the month of Muharram in the Hijri calendar, a day well-known as the “Holy Ashura.”
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, different religious organizations, including Islamic Foundation and Bangladesh Ahle Hadith Bayte Foundation, observed the day through various programs. The Biswabangla Foundation arranged a procession and held a street-corner meeting at Shaheb Bazar Zero Point in the city from 9.30 am to 10.40 am, which saw the participation of around 350 Muslims. Prominent figures such as Dr. Shah Syed Hasib Ul Hasan, the local unit president of the foundation, and Sadeque Ali, the general secretary, along with Abdus Samad, a former councilor of Rajshahi City Corporation, and Hafez Nuruzzaman, Coordinator of Al-Jamiyatul Arabiya, were among the speakers on this occasion.
The Shia community also marked the day with a peaceful procession in the city area. Other programs included Quran Khwani, Milad Mahfil, and fasting. The Islamic Foundation organized a discussion on the ‘Importance of Holy Ashura in Preserving Peace and Order in Society’ at Hatemkha Jame Mosque.
Thousands of Muslims offered special munajats after Johr prayers, seeking divine blessings and eternal peace for departed souls, particularly their loved ones, and prayed for continued peace, progress, and prosperity of the country and the greater welfare of the Muslim Ummah. Security measures were tightened by law enforcement agencies, particularly Rajshahi Metropolitan Police and Rapid Action Battalion, to ensure the day was observed peacefully.
In addition, Rajshahi City Corporation arranged for the lighting of all graveyards on this significant occasion.
