Dhaka: The holy Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), the grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), is being observed across the country today with due respect and religious solemnity. Today marks the 10th day of the month of Muharram in the Hijri calendar-1447, a day known widely as the “Holy Ashura.”
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the day is regarded as the day of Karbala, a historical event with significant religious implications for the global Muslim community. Muslims worldwide reflect on the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), his family, and 72 followers who achieved martyrdom in 680 AD in the desert of Karbala, Iraq. Their unwavering commitment to truth and justice against Yazid’s forces is seen as a beacon of self-sacrifice in the history of humanity.
On the eve of the holy Ashura, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus issued a message honoring Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) and the other martyrs of Karbala. He expressed deep respect for their sacrifice, emphasizing that Islam is a religion of truth, justice, and peace-a legacy upheld by the martyrs against the tyranny of Yazid.
Professor Yunus highlighted that this sacrifice by the brave soldiers of Islam serves as an enduring source of strength and courage for humanity’s ongoing struggle against oppression and injustice. He noted that many significant events, including the creation of the world, are believed to have occurred on this day. According to Hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) placed special importance on observing two fasts on the occasion of holy Ashura.
He urged everyone to embrace the significance of this day by performing good deeds to gain closeness to Almighty Allah and to strive for equality, justice, and peace in society. Professor Yunus also wished for the unity, solidarity, and continuous progress of the Muslim Ummah.
The day has been declared a public holiday. Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Television, and private TV channels are airing special programs, while newspapers and online news portals are publishing supplements to highlight the day’s significance. Special prayers and discussions are being held at mosques and other relevant locations, including the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and the Islamic Foundation in the country.
