Historic May Day observed in Manikganj

The historic "May Day' was observed here today as elsewhere across the country and the globe in a befitting manner. This year's theme of the day is "Sramik-Malik Gorbo Desh, Smart Hobey Bangladesh". The day is being observed across the world since 1886 commemorating the supreme sacrifices of the workers at HayMarket, Chicago, in the USA for eight-hour working days and upholding the rights of the working class people. To press home their demands, working people had to sacrifice their valuable lives in tragic bomb attacks and police atrocities on May 1, 1886 and the following days. In 1889, the International Socialist Conference declared that in commemoration of the Haymarket affair, and to pay respect to the innocent victims, May 1 would be an international holiday for labour, now known in many places as "International Workers' Day". On the occasion, a big colourful rally, under the auspices of District Construction Workers Federation, was brought out from Beutha road and ended at the same pla ce after parading the main roads of the town including Shahid Rafique Road. Male and female construction workers participated in the rally. After the rally, a discussion was held with District Awami League Organising Secretary Sudeb Kumar Saha in the chair. The discussion was addressed, among others, by President of the organization Sardar Babul Hossain, its General Secretary Anwar Hossain and Treasurer Ali Hossain. Meanwhile, Singair Labour Welfare Samity organised another discussion on Singair upazila premises marking the day with President of the organization Sheikh Nurul Haque in the chair. Labour leaders of the organization including its General Secretary Nurul Islam spoke at the discussion. Earlier, a rally was also brought out from the Singair High School Play Ground that paraded the main roads and market areas of the upazila. Source: Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha
