Dhaka: The High Court has declared the Election Commission’s gazette that reallocated Algi and Hamirdi unions from Faridpur-4 constituency to Faridpur-2 as illegal. This decision mandates the restoration of these unions to their original constituency, Faridpur-4.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the verdict was delivered by a High Court division bench consisting of Justice Md Mozibur Rahman Miah and Justice Md Hamidur Rahman. The court instructed the authorities to annul the previous gazette within 24 hours and issue a new one reflecting the reinstatement of the unions to Faridpur-4.

The legal action was initiated by a writ petition filed by Md Shahidul Islam Babul, a BNP nomination aspirant for Faridpur-4, alongside Supreme Court lawyer Md Mahbubur Rahman Dulal and three others. Barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallob, representing the petitioners, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, confirming the return of Algi and Hamirdi unions to their original constituency.

The initial gazette by the Election Commission had transferred the two Bhanga upazila unions to Nagarkanda upazila under Faridpur-2 constituency, leading to significant unrest. The decision prompted protests, road blockades, and vandalism at various local government offices, highlighting the contentious nature of the reallocation.
