Dhaka: The High Court has raised a significant query regarding the lack of effective measures to protect and ensure the fundamental rights of street children, which could potentially be deemed illegal. This directive was issued by the HC bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan following a public interest litigation writ petition.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the court has demanded an explanation from the relevant authorities on why they have not yet taken steps to create necessary rules, policies, or laws aimed at safeguarding, rehabilitating, and promoting the welfare of street children. Moreover, the court has expressed the need for a comprehensive nationwide investigation and survey to assess the current situation of street children.
The High Court is seeking further clarification on why there haven't been effective measures implemented to prevent harassment, abuse, neglect, and exploitation of street children. This inquiry comes in response to the writ petition filed by Equitas Foundation, which seeks to ensure the rights, rehabilitation, and registration of these vulnerable children.
Advocates Md Tanvir Ahmed, Biplob Kumar Poddar, Barrister Nishad Mahmud, Noor Muhammad Shahin Shahnewaz, and SM Zakir Hossain represented the writ petitioner in this case. The court's directive underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to safeguard the rights and welfare of street children across the nation.
