Dhaka:The High Court has granted bail to former lawmaker Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman in a case related to allegations of obstructing government work and misbehaving with officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the bail was granted by a High Court bench led by Justice KM Zahid Sarwar following a hearing of Akhtaruzzaman's bail petition. Senior lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir represented Akhtaruzzaman, who has a history of expulsion from the BNP and joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in December 2025, during the proceedings.
Previously, on October 26, the Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-5 had denied his bail request. Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police from his residence in the Dhaka Cantonment area on October 2 and was placed on a one-day remand for questioning the following day. On October 4, after the remand period, a court denied his bail application and ordered his incarceration.
The case against Akhtaruzzaman stems from an incident on October 1 at the airport involving passengers arriving from Madinah on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight. The passengers reportedly faced issues due to a shortage of luggage trolleys and delays in baggage collection. The case statement accuses Akhtaruzzaman of verbally abusing and threatening Airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad, assaulting security supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin, and aggressively interacting with a Biman representative. Additionally, he allegedly threw bottles of Zamzam water from passengers' trolleys during the incident.
