Dhaka: The High Court (HC) today issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain why the provision for the speaker to administer the oath to the president shall not be declared illegal.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the rule also sought an explanation as to why the provision, which was included in the constitution through the 15th amendment, should not be declared contrary to the constitution of 1972. The decision was made by a High Court division bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain, following a hearing on a writ petition filed concerning the matter.

The court has directed the law secretary, cabinet secretary, and Supreme Court registrar general to respond to the rule as respondents within eight weeks. Advocate Omar Faruk presented the plea before the court.
