Dhaka: The High Court (HC) today ordered the closure of government and non-government secondary and lower secondary schools starting February 18 in observance of the holy month of Ramadan. The court’s decision mandates that schools remain closed during this period, with exceptions made for scheduled examinations, which must proceed as planned.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the order was issued by a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida and Justice Md. Asif Hasan. This followed the hearing of a writ petition filed in the public interest. Md. Ilias Ali Mondol, the petitioner and a Supreme Court lawyer, argued the case himself before the court. Advocate Tanzina Bobby Liza also represented the petitioner during the hearing.

The writ petition was filed on January 20 by Md. Ilias Ali Mondol, seeking a directive to close lower secondary and secondary schools during Ramadan. Before submitting the petition, a legal notice had been sent to the Secretaries of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, addressing the same issue.
