Dhaka: The High Court (HC) today issued a rule asking the authorities concerned why it should not order Tk 5 crore in compensation for the family of an infant whose arm was broken during treatment at Delta Medical College Hospital in the capital. A High Court division bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Sayed Jahed Mansur passed the order after holding a hearing on a writ petition filed by the father of the victim.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the court also sought explanations on why it should not pass an order to take punitive action against the doctors, accused of negligence in treatment. Furthermore, it directed a probe into the incident with a report to be submitted within three months.

Barrister Md Shafikul Islam presented the plea before the court, while Assistant Attorney General Ikramul Kabir represented the state. The incident in question occurred when a five-day-old baby was admitted to the hospital on April 3, and his hand allegedly got broken by the doctors there. The baby’s father, Nurer Safah, subsequently filed a writ with the High Court seeking justice and compensation.
