Dhaka: The High Court (HC) today directed the railway authorities to allocate special coaches for women on every passenger train during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha journey. This directive aims to ensure the safety and comfort of female passengers during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a High Court division bench comprising Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan issued the order following a hearing on a writ petition related to this matter. The petition, filed by Advocate Md Ajmal Hossain Khokon, highlighted the lack of implementation of provisions within the Railway Act that mandate reserving special coaches for women.

Advocate Khokon explained to newsmen that the High Court had previously issued a rule on the matter in response to a 2021 writ petition, which remains pending. With Eid-ul-Azha approaching, an urgent application was submitted to the court, requesting directives to reserve special coaches for women. After reviewing the plea, the court issued today’s directive to ensure compliance with the Railway Act’s provisions.
