Dhaka: Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent figure of the July Uprising and the spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha, passed away in a Singapore hospital after battling for his life for six days. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus announced the news to the nation, expressing sorrow over the loss of a dedicated fighter for democracy.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chief Adviser Yunus conveyed that Singapore's Foreign Minister Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan personally informed him of Hadi's demise. Prof Yunus paid tribute to Hadi, acknowledging his role in the struggle against oppressive forces and declared him a martyr. The Chief Adviser announced a one-day state mourning on Saturday, with the national flag to be flown at half-mast in various institutions and missions.
Hadi, who was a prospective independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot on December 12 in the Paltan area. Prof Yunus expressed his condolences to Hadi's family and pledged government support for his wife and child. He also expressed gratitude to the Singaporean government for their care during Hadi's treatment.
The Chief Adviser assured that those responsible for Hadi's murder would face justice, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation. He called for national unity and restraint, urging citizens to uphold democratic values and resist destabilization efforts. Prof Yunus highlighted Hadi's unfulfilled dream of contributing to a democratic Bangladesh and called upon the nation to carry forward his legacy.
In memory of Hadi, special prayers will be held across the country, and the Chief Adviser encouraged the nation to remain united in the pursuit of democracy and justice, viewing this as a fitting tribute to Hadi's sacrifice.
