Dhaka: The BNP government has embarked on a "relentless journey" to consolidate democratic values, ensure good governance, and fulfill its election pledges during its first 180 days in office, according to Prime Minister's Office spokesperson Mahdi Amin. Speaking at an exchange of views with journalists to mark the 180 days of the government, Amin detailed the welfare, economic, administrative, and institutional initiatives undertaken during this period.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Mahdi Amin emphasized that the government's journey, guided by the principle of "Bangladesh First," has focused on accountability, transparency, and people's welfare. The administration aims to build a prosperous, self-reliant, and welfare-oriented Bangladesh, with Allah's blessings. The event was held at the International Conference Centre 'Shapla' at the Prime Minister's Office in Tejgaon.
Mahdi Amin presented statistics on the government's activities and achievements over the past 180 days, as well as future plans. He highlighted the successful execution of the 13th parliamentary election held on February 12, ensuring people's power through a free, fair, and neutral process. The representative government took oath on February 17, marking a new era of accountability, transparency, and responsibility to the people.
The government, born from a 15-year-long struggle against fascism and an anti-discrimination movement, received unprecedented public support. Mahdi outlined several initiatives aligned with the government's election manifesto and welfare programs, including the implementation of the 19-point program of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia's Vision 2030, the BNP's 27-point program, and the joint movement's 31-point program.
At its first cabinet meeting, the government waived loans, including interest, of up to Tk10,000 for 1.3 million farming families. The administration has also introduced several cards, such as the 'Krishak Card' for farmers and the 'Family Card' for women. Additionally, honorariums for religious leaders and nationwide canal excavation and tree plantation programs have been revived.
Mahdi emphasized government measures taken during Ramadan and Eid to prevent artificial syndicates and keep commodity prices under control. Workers' salaries and bonuses were ensured, and Tk2,000 crore was released to clear outstanding dues of retired MPO-listed teachers.
In the education sector, a record number of ordinances have been converted into laws, a revised anti-terrorism ordinance has been used to ban a "fascist political organization," and new subjects have been introduced into the curriculum. Free education for girls up to graduation, mid-day meals in primary schools, and initiatives for free Wi-Fi facilities have been launched. Opportunities for students to attend parliament and participate in sports and innovation competitions have also been introduced.
Mahdi noted initiatives to introduce 200 electric buses in Dhaka and an AI-based traffic management system. He highlighted the government's strong stance on law and order, with steps taken to establish a police and administration free from political harassment. The United States has raised its travel advisory for Bangladesh to Level 2, reflecting visible progress in several high-profile cases.
Addressing the energy crisis, Mahdi said discussions are ongoing with leading companies from Malaysia, China, and the United States to find solutions. The government is committed to a dignified and balanced foreign policy based on the "Bangladesh First" principle.
Mahdi expressed hope that the government would continue working under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to build a prosperous, self-reliant, humane, secure, and welfare-oriented Bangladesh. The program was moderated by Prime Minister's Press Secretary Saleh Shibly, with various officials and ministers responding to journalists' questions.
