Dhaka: Labour, Employment and Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hossain emphasized the interim government's commitment to ensuring suitable employment, equality, and safety for workers. He made these remarks during a conference titled "Empower Ability: Powering Every Ability" held at a local hotel.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the conference was jointly organized by Bangladesh Business and Disabled Network (BBDN), Brac Bank, and GIZ. Dr. Sakhawat underlined the importance of integrating disabled individuals into the workforce, recognizing their potential as citizens, workers, and contributors.
Dr. Sakhawat expressed admiration for the business community's efforts to include individuals with disabilities in mainstream employment. He highlighted the need to empower these individuals through recruitment, education, training, and a culture of respect.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment is actively working to uphold workers' rights and safety by reinforcing labour laws and enhancing health standards, Dr. Sakhawat stated. He also stressed the importance of collaboration between the government, employers, and development partners to create an inclusive Bangladesh.
Recently, the interim government signed three International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions, achieving the status of a 10 basic convention signatory country in Asia, which signifies its dedication to workers' protection. The conference was attended by Labour Secretary Dr Md Sanwar Jahan Bhuiyan and representatives from over 50 institutions.
