Tangail: State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, Agriculture and Food Sultan Salauddin Tuku today said the government is working to achieve food self-sufficiency and transform surplus production into exportable commodities. He made the remarks while addressing a function held at the Tangail Sadar Upazila Parishad premises in Tangail this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the programme was organised under the agricultural incentive scheme for the 2025-26 fiscal year (Kharif-1 season) to boost jute production by distributing free jute seeds, fertilisers, and farming equipment among small, marginal, and medium farmers. The state minister highlighted that a significant portion of Tangail Sadar comprises char areas, and the government will undertake maximum efforts for the development of these areas.
He noted that vast tracts of char land remain fallow, and bringing those lands under cultivation would benefit marginal farmers and enhance food supply in neighbouring districts. He added that irrigation machines have been distributed in char areas for the first time, while jute seeds and fertilisers have already been supplied to farmers.
Tuku assured that the country has adequate fertiliser stocks and strict monitoring is in place to ensure proper distribution. "No farmer will face any difficulty in obtaining fertiliser," he stated, emphasizing that the government will continue to take effective steps to ensure comprehensive support for marginal farmers.
The function was presided over by Deputy Commissioner of Tangail Sharifa Haque. Other speakers included Project Director of the Bangladesh Char Area Modern Agricultural Technology Extension Project (1st Revised) Ziaur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Tangail Ashek Parvez, and agriculturist Noor e Alam Siddiqui.
