Dhaka: The government is contemplating the inclusion of traffic police in the investigations of road accidents, as announced by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali. This announcement was made during a two-day workshop focused on improving the investigative skills of police officers handling road accident cases.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the DMP Commissioner emphasized the need for the traffic department to play a more active role alongside the crime department, which traditionally handles road crash investigations. He stated that enhancing the skills of police officers is crucial for conducting thorough investigations into road accidents.

The Commissioner underscored the importance of strictly enforcing existing laws to mitigate road mishaps. He stated that identifying the causes of road crashes accurately can significantly contribute to reducing fatalities resulting from such incidents.

Additionally, the DMP Commissioner highlighted the necessity for all road users to adhere to traffic rules. He pointed out that violations, such as speeding, abrupt lane changes, and indiscriminate crossing, heighten the likelihood of accidents. He also noted that most road accidents in Dhaka occur between midnight and morning, when traffic is sparse.

In a bid to alleviate public inconvenience, the Commissioner urged political parties to refrain from organizing events on roads. He mentioned that political road programs often disrupt daily life for citizens.

The workshop, held at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka, is supported by the Global Road Safety Partnership, an international organization providing training to DMP officers. The event saw participation from sixty officers across various DMP units.
