Govt Strives for Democracy and Good Governance, Says Jatiya Sangsad Speaker

Bhola: Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, stated that the present government is dedicated to establishing democracy and good governance in the country. He highlighted the triumph of democracy through the July Mass Uprising and noted that the people of Bangladesh had not experienced democracy over the past two decades. The speaker emphasized the essential role of a democratic system for development in today’s world.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad made these remarks while addressing a views-exchange meeting with district administration officials, political leaders, media personnel, and members of civil society at the Bhola Circuit House. This meeting marked the end of his three-day visit to the district. He remarked that the politically aware people of Bangladesh do not accept authoritarian rule and have re-established democracy despite facing repression, including enforced disappearances and killings.



Referring to the 2024 Mass Uprising, the speaker noted that the movement attracted global attention and brought pride to the nation. He acknowledged attempts by some global powers to undermine Bangladesh as a developing country but affirmed that the people’s struggle for democracy has enhanced the country’s global dignity. On human rights, the speaker stated that although violations occur worldwide, the people of Bangladesh have firmly established human rights.



Expressing optimism, he mentioned that the elected government, under Tarique Rahman’s leadership, aims to bring happiness and prosperity to the people and continue working towards economic development. Hafiz Uddin Ahmed emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring good governance and the rule of law, irrespective of political affiliation, stressing that no one should face harassment due to political ideology.



The speaker also highlighted the improved relationship among political parties, allowing people to feel relieved after a long time. He noted that a credible election has been conducted and that the government operates in line with public expectations. Upon his arrival at the Circuit House, the Speaker was accorded a guard of honour. After the meeting, he departed for Dhaka via Barishal.



Officials present at the meeting included Deputy Commissioner Dr Shamim Rahman, Superintendent of Police Md Shahidullah Kawsar, District Council Administrator Md Golam Nabi Alamgir, and BNP district member secretary, among others.
