Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman today assured that the government will not interfere in the practice of free and independent journalism, during the 31st founding anniversary celebration of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on its premises here.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Rahman emphasized the government's stance, stating, "The government has no intention of interfering in the media or in the professional duties of journalists." His remarks were part of a broad discussion highlighting the media's crucial role in the country's democratic processes.
The event was attended by key figures including LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Prime Minister's Political Adviser and BNP's acting Secretary General Md Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Habibur Rashid, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury, and State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque.
Principal Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmed and senior journalist Shafik Rehman, along with other leaders from political, journalistic, social, and cultural organizations, also spoke on the occasion. Their presence underscored the cross-sector recognition of media's integral role in society.
Minister Rahman reiterated that the flourishing democracy in the country is largely due to the robust role played by the media, acknowledging it as an equal partner in the nation's democratic progression and development.
The event also included ceremonial activities marking the DRU anniversary, such as the hoisting of national and organizational flags atop the DRU building, the release of balloons and doves symbolizing peace, a colorful procession, and a cake-cutting ceremony. DRU President Abu Saleh Akon chaired the program, with General Secretary Mynul Hasan Sohel moderating the proceedings.
