Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today reaffirmed his government's commitment to transforming the Bangladesh Army into a modern, technology-driven force capable of addressing contemporary security challenges. Speaking at the inauguration of the Army Headquarters Selection Board-2026 held at the Dhaka Cantonment, Rahman emphasized the need for a sustainable defense model that aligns with the country's geographical and economic realities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prime Minister Rahman highlighted the complex security landscape facing Bangladesh, which includes threats related to maritime and border security, cyber threats, and regional geopolitical competition. He stressed that the government's vision involves enhancing capabilities such as drone technology, satellite surveillance, and cyber warfare to build a resilient defense system.
In his address to senior army officials, the Prime Minister articulated a vision of integrated national security, urging collaboration among the armed forces, law enforcement, civil administration, industry, and educational institutions. He reiterated that the government's objective is not to promote war but to ensure a self-reliant and prepared military capable of safeguarding the nation's sovereignty and interests.
Rahman also underscored the importance of a disciplined and modern military through strategic defense planning, promoting the domestic defense industry, and strengthening civil-military relations. He indicated that the Army Headquarters Selection Board 2026 aims to establish a merit-based system for recruitment and promotion, fostering professional leadership within the army.
Reflecting on his personal connection to the military, Rahman expressed nostalgia for his upbringing in a military environment and recognized the Army's historical contributions to Bangladesh's independence and development. He paid tribute to the army personnel who have sacrificed their lives in peacekeeping and counter-terrorism operations, emphasizing the Bangladesh Army's esteemed international reputation.
The Prime Minister also commended the Army's role during the 2024 July Uprising and its support during the interim government's tenure, noting its contributions to maintaining law and order, supporting democratic processes, and addressing national crises, including the global fuel oil crisis.
Rahman concluded by emphasizing the need for professionalism in promotions within the army, advocating for merit and competence as key criteria. He invoked the words of late U.S. General Norman Schwarzkopf, highlighting the importance of discipline and fitness in military readiness.
