Dhaka: The government is taking significant steps to eliminate digital inequality by expanding internet and device access, especially for women and rural populations, said Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser overseeing the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology. Speaking at a press conference held at the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) bhaban in Agargaon here on the occasion of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, he said the ongoing efforts are to ensure that citizens can directly access to government services through their mobile phones.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Faiz highlighted the importance of Goal 10 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which emphasizes reducing inequality. He pointed out that this goal aligns perfectly with the theme of this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. Despite the government’s efforts, he noted that women’s participation in digital governance, access to digital platforms, and access to digital services remains low.
He acknowledged that women continue to lag behind in many areas but assured that the government is actively working to bridge this gap and empower women through greater digital inclusion. Faiz also called on the media to support these initiatives, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts to raise awareness for marginalized groups and bring them into the digital fold.
