Dhaka: Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized that the primary challenge for the current government is the reconstruction of state institutions and fortification of the democratic framework. In his address to reporters at the Secretariat, after assuming charge of his ministry, he outlined the government's commitment to strengthening local government bodies and eradicating corruption to deliver services directly to citizens.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mirza Fakhrul, who holds the position of Secretary General of BNP, articulated the government's overarching aim of nation-building under the leadership of the Prime Minister. He emphasized that democracy will be the focal point of all government endeavors. Addressing the issue of vacant positions in district councils, upazilas, and municipalities, he expressed the intent to fill these roles through elections promptly, although acknowledging that it would be a gradual process.
The minister, drawing on his previous experience in the ministry, expressed confidence in addressing these challenges effectively. When questioned about corruption and governance issues in various departments, he affirmed that eliminating institutional corruption and resolving public grievances are top priorities. He also mentioned plans to scrutinize the irregularities of the preceding government and implement corrective measures.
In response to inquiries about the nation's economic conditions, Mirza Fakhrul noted signs of returning macroeconomic stability and progress in stabilizing the banking sector. He assured that the government is poised to overcome the current economic hurdles. Regarding price control measures ahead of Ramadan, he announced that the first cabinet meeting would occur later in the day, where decisive actions to stabilize the market would be discussed under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
He commended the Advisory Council's efforts over the past 18 months for managing a critical transition period, stating that they have successfully initiated several positive changes towards restoring democracy.
