Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon announced that the government has committed to focusing on an agro-based economy for the upcoming Bengali New Year and the following year, highlighting the significant contributions of farmers to the nation. He made this statement during his keynote address at the ‘Bangla New Year 1433’ celebration, organized by the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at the National Theatre Hall.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Swapon emphasized that Pahela Baishakh, a day marked by festivity and joy, embodies inclusivity, transcending religious, racial, or social barriers. The minister underlined the essential role of agriculture in the country’s development, stating, “To honor the contributions of farmers, the government has dedicated this New Year and the upcoming year to the country’s agro-based economy.”
Swapon further explained that the Bengali New Year was established by harmonizing the Hijri and Gregorian calendars, aiming to accommodate the economic needs of Bangladeshi farmers. He also mentioned that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman celebrated the occasion with farmers in Tangail, showcasing the government’s dedication to supporting agriculture and the farming community.
Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, adviser on policy, strategy, information and broadcasting, and cultural affairs to the Prime Minister, also addressed the gathering as a special guest, extending New Year greetings to all present.
Cultural Affairs Secretary Kaniz Moula, in her presidential speech, highlighted the universal appeal of Pahela Baishakh, noting that Bangladesh seeks to progress as a prosperous nation embracing all cultural diversity, including its ethnic communities. The event included a welcome speech by Director General of the academy Sheikh Rezauddin Ahmed and a vote of thanks by Secretary Mohammad Zakir Hossain. The celebration concluded with a cultural performance by the academy’s artistes.
