Dhaka: Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood today announced that the government has initiated preparations to manage potential temporary electricity and fuel crises in light of ongoing global instability.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Mahmood highlighted the concerns arising from the current unrest in the Middle East, which could lead to a temporary crisis in the country's energy sector. He addressed these issues during an emergency review meeting focused on tackling the emerging situation.
During the meeting, the minister emphasized the importance of public cooperation in using electricity and fuel economically. Citizens were urged to avoid unnecessary lighting at shopping malls, community centers, and other locations, and to limit excessive fuel usage.
In a bid to prevent misuse and ensure proper distribution, the government has instructed traders not to sell diesel and petrol in open markets. Law enforcement agencies will closely monitor compliance with these directives. Additionally, district administration, police, and Border Guard Bangladesh have been tasked with implementing measures to prevent fuel smuggling.
The instructions were crafted with careful consideration to avoid public inconvenience during the holy month of Ramadan. The ministry has proactively taken steps to minimize the negative impact of the global situation, including sourcing fuel from various suppliers to maintain a steady procurement process.
The meeting was attended by State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit, the energy secretary, the BPC Chairman, the BPDB chairman, and other relevant officials.
