Dhaka: All additional secretaries and officials of equivalent rank within the government and state-owned institutions have been directed to travel by economy class for official foreign trips, as a part of newly introduced austerity measures.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the Finance Division issued a notice regarding this decision following a letter from the Prime Minister’s Office dated April 29, 2026. The directive aims to curb government expenditure and ensure the prudent utilization of public funds.

Under previous regulations, senior officials ranked at additional secretary and above had the privilege to travel in higher classes, such as business or executive class, during their official foreign tours. The new directive will remain in effect until a fresh order is issued, signaling a significant policy shift in government spending habits.
