Chattogram: The interim government today strongly condemned the violent attack at an election campaign event of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) nominated candidate for Chattogram-8 constituency, Ershad Ullah, and ordered a full probe into the incident.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Chief Adviser's Press Wing released a statement revealing that an immediate investigation by the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) suggested Ershad Ullah was not the intended target of the attack, but he was injured by a stray bullet. The government expressed its wishes for his early recovery and emphasized its commitment to uncovering the details of the incident.
The government expressed its deep concern over this criminal act and reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the safety and rights of all candidates and citizens involved in the democratic process. The statement highlighted that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has instructed security forces to make every effort to identify and apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face justice promptly.
The statement further stressed that there is no place for violence and intimidation in political and social spheres. It was noted that the CMP has already initiated a manhunt to capture the attackers.
The interim government also urged all political entities and their supporters to maintain calm, exercise restraint, and ensure that the upcoming February general election is conducted in a peaceful, dignified, and fair environment.
Finally, the statement assured that the government would implement all necessary measures to ensure secure and peaceful conditions conducive to free, fair, credible, and festive elections throughout Bangladesh.
