Dhaka: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today announced that the interim government is actively working to remove discrimination within the fisheries sector, driven by the principles of the anti-discrimination movement. She emphasized the government's commitment to making Bangladesh a discrimination-free nation, particularly focusing on the fisheries industry. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Adviser Farida Akhter made these remarks as the chief guest at a seminar titled 'Challenges and Forward, Rights of Small Scale Fishing Communities: The Context of Bangladesh' held at the CIRDAP auditorium. During her address, she highlighted the importance of recognizing those who rely on fishing for their livelihood as the true fishermen, while asserting that traders should not be classified as such. Akhter also emphasized the need for gender equality within the fisheries sector, advocating for equal recognition of fisherwomen. She asserted that the economic status of fishermen could significantl y improve if they receive the necessary facilities and support. The adviser pointed out that Bangladesh is not fully utilizing the potential of its deep-sea resources due to a lack of suitable fishing vessels. She stressed that the nation's poverty levels could decrease if the marine species, including various fish, are effectively tapped. Furthermore, Akhter highlighted the importance of protecting and increasing local fish species in the country's haors and rivers to ensure sustainability and growth in the fisheries sector. The seminar was moderated by Coast Foundation's executive director Md Rezaul Karim, with its deputy executive director Sanat Kumar Bhoumik delivering the keynote speech.
