Sylhet: Commerce, Industries and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir today announced that the government is actively working to alleviate public suffering through the implementation of development projects focused on enhancing transport and urban infrastructure nationwide.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister, speaking as the chief guest at a joint meeting with officials of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) and Sylhet City Corporation at the Sylhet Circuit House, revealed a new road project from Ambarkhana to Lakkatura. He described this initiative as a 'blessing' for the people of Sylhet, aimed at mitigating the city's persistent traffic congestion.
After reviewing the progress of the road construction works, Minister Muktadir emphasized the necessity of completing ongoing projects and major road developments on schedule to reduce public inconvenience. He directed officials to expedite the implementation process in line with approved plans.
The minister highlighted that Sylhet City Corporation comprises 42 wards, with several development projects underway to ensure their overall progress. He expressed optimism that these projects would transform Sylhet into a more modern, clean, and organized city, addressing long-standing issues related to water logging and road infrastructure.
Emphasizing the significance of sustainable urban drainage, the minister noted the importance of preserving the city's natural streams to combat water logging. He advocated for regular excavation and maintenance of canals to ensure uninterrupted water flow and minimize flooding during the monsoon.
"A permanent solution to water logging is possible only through proper planning that ensures the natural flow of water from its sources to the rivers," he stated.
The meeting was attended by several key figures, including Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury, Sylhet Zila Parishad Administrator Abul Kaher Chowdhury Shamim, Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun, and other officials from relevant departments.
Later, in a briefing with reporters, Minister Muktadir discussed ongoing road development projects in Sylhet. He mentioned plans to widen the Sylhet-Fenchuganj-Moulvibazar road to enhance connectivity. Additionally, the government intends to construct alternative roads linking Sylhet Osmani International Airport with Lakkatura and extending from Lakkatura to the TB Gate to improve traffic flow and fortify the city's transport network.
