Dhaka: The interim government has announced the formation of a new Election Commission (EC) led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin, a retired secretary. The new EC will include four additional commissioners, whose appointments were made official through separate gazette notifications issued by the Cabinet Division, taking immediate effect. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the newly appointed election commissioners are former additional secretary Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar, retired district and sessions judge Abdur Rahmanel Masud, joint secretary (retired) Begum Tahmida Ahmad, and Brigadier General (Retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah. President Mohammed Shahabuddin exercised his constitutional authority to make these appointments, following recommendations from a six-member search committee. The search committee, formed by the government and led by Appellate Division Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, was constituted on October 29 in line with the Clause-3 of 'The Chief Election Commissione r and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2022'. Its task was to recommend names of qualified individuals for the roles of CEC and other commissioners, culminating in the current appointments.
