Dhaka: The government has formed a four-member committee to strengthen the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), the stock market regulator. The initiative aims to enhance the regulatory framework and boost the local stock market’s development.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the committee will also focus on the development of the local stock market as outlined in a circular issued by the Financial Institutions Division (FID) of the Finance Ministry. The committee’s responsibilities include recommending measures to strengthen the regulatory and monitoring activities of the stock market, attracting investment and expatriate bonds, and stabilizing the market.

The committee will be chaired by Chief Adviser’s special assistant Dr Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, with BSEC commissioner Farzana Lalarukh serving as the member secretary. The committee will also include Prof M Sadiqul Islam of the Finance Department at Dhaka University and an additional secretary at the insurance and capital market department of the FID.

In addition to its primary objectives, the committee will offer suggestions to increase liquidity in the market, improve corporate governance, and create a favourable environment for new companies to enter the capital market.
