Dhaka: The government has announced an extension of magistracy powers for commissioned officers in the armed forces, effective until February 28, 2026. This decision applies to officers holding the rank of captain or equivalent and above, and will come into effect from tomorrow.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the public administration ministry issued a notification today confirming that the magistracy powers have also been extended to officers on deputation with the Bangladesh Coast Guard and Border Guard Bangladesh. This move is in line with Sections 12(1) and 17 of The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, which allows these officers to wield special executive magistracy powers across the country for the specified duration.
The officers have been authorized to exercise their magistracy powers under specific sections of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, including Sections 64, 65, 83, 84, 86, 95(2), 100, 105, 107, 109, 110, 126, 127, 128, 130, 133, and 142. Notably, the government had previously extended these powers for a 60-day period beginning September 11 of this year.
