Dhaka: National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan has announced that the government is working to make the country’s tax system more user-friendly to encourage greater compliance and participation. ‘The government is focusing on improving the tax refund mechanism for excess payments and integrating bank account information into the e-tax return system,’ he stated during a pre-budget discussion.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Khan made these remarks at an event organised by the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB) at the Ruhul Quddus Auditorium in the capital. The discussion focused on the National Budget 2026-27, bringing together policymakers, tax experts, professionals, academicians, and stakeholders to discuss fiscal priorities and recommendations.
Khan, who also serves as Secretary of the Internal Resources Division, emphasized the government’s appreciation for the constructive recommendations provided by professionals, noting that such initiatives are crucial for expanding the tax net and enhancing taxpayer engagement. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration in shaping effective fiscal policies.
Former NBR member (Tax) Ranjan Kumar Bhowmik presented recommendations on tax policy reforms aimed at improving efficiency and compliance. NBR First Secretary (VAT Policy and VAT Exemption) Md Mashiur Rahman discussed proposed VAT reforms and exemption mechanisms, while CEO of MM and Co. Cost and Management Accountants Md. Mohiman addressed the Tax Verification System (TVS) and other pressing tax and VAT issues.
ICMAB President Md Kausar Alam stressed the need to improve the country’s tax-to-GDP ratio, broaden the tax base, ensure stability in the financial sector, and create a more conducive environment for both domestic and foreign investment. The event concluded with the presentation of mementos and a vote of thanks by ICMAB Secretary Monjur Md. Shaiful Azam.
