Dhaka: Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has outlined the interim government's primary responsibilities, emphasizing the need for elections, sectoral reforms, and human rights trials. In an interview with BSS at his office in the Bangladesh Secretariat, Dr. Salehuddin detailed the administration's approach under the leadership of Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Salehuddin highlighted the government's commitment to delivering a national election, while acknowledging past barriers to free voting under the previous regime. He expressed confidence in achieving a consensus among politicians to maintain order during the election period, with a roadmap anticipated for elections between December 2025 and June 2026.
Dr. Salehuddin also addressed the ongoing reforms, particularly regarding the National Board of Revenue (NBR). He stressed the necessity of separating the NBR into distinct policy and management divisions to enhance efficiency. Amidst concerns from NBR staff, the government assured that operations would continue as usual while amendments to the 'Revenue Policy and Revenue Management Ordinance 2025' are being considered.
The Finance Adviser also commented on the challenges posed by public demonstrations, which he observed were more suppressed under previous administrations. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to resolving issues through dialogue and ensuring justice for all parties involved in the NBR restructuring.
Dr. Salehuddin concluded by acknowledging the advisory committee's role in the NBR reforms and the ongoing discussions with international partners, including the IMF and the World Bank, to align the revenue board's structure with global standards. The government's recent press release confirmed the continuation of existing operations for income tax and customs officials, with structural amendments to follow stakeholder consultations.
