Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed today stated that the government has successfully upheld human rights and established the rule of law over the past six months, seeking continued cooperation to maintain this standard for the remainder of its tenure.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Home Minister made these remarks during a panel discussion titled "A panel discussion to make the disappeared appear: Law, Justice, Accountability and Human Rights," organized by 'Maayer Daak' at the Bangladesh National Museum. Ahmed emphasized that no incidents of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, or political persecution have occurred since the government assumed responsibility.
Reflecting on legislative initiatives to address past abuses, the Minister highlighted the newly introduced act presented in Parliament. He elaborated on the law's aim to ensure victims receive remedies, have direct court access, and seek justice while holding perpetrators accountable. This legislation incorporates standard definitions and penalties, including life imprisonment or capital punishment for recovered bodies, under the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Act and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
The bill also includes provisions for legal heirs of disappeared persons to manage assets after five years with court approval, and state-backed compensation if perpetrators fail to pay. Salahuddin Ahmed, himself a victim of enforced disappearance, emphasized the necessity of a robust anti-disappearance law in Bangladesh, noting the permanence of such legislation despite changes in government.
Addressing institutional reforms, Ahmed mentioned the drafting of an updated National Human Rights Commission Act, aligning with international standards while addressing national contexts. He remarked on the ongoing moral and structural improvements within law enforcement agencies to ensure accountability and effectiveness.
In response to allegations regarding an incident involving Miraj Sheikh in Mongla, Bagerhat, the Minister dismissed claims of political involvement or state-sponsored disappearance. He reassured that an independent cross-force inquiry was conducted and expressed openness to further investigations if needed.
"We have proven our sincerity over these six months. I seek everyone's cooperation so that we can maintain the rule of law and uphold human rights for the rest of our tenure," he added.
