Dhaka: The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) has given the green light to procure four cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at prices ranging from $23.98 to $28.03 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), aiming to meet the nation's energy demand.
According to United News of Bangladesh, three of these cargoes will be acquired through the international quotation process, while an additional cargo will be secured from Saudi Aramco's trading arm under a government-to-government agreement. The meeting, presided over by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, took place at the Bangladesh Secretariat, where the Energy and Mineral Resources Division presented the proposals.
Under the international Request for Quotation (RFQ) process, the 49th LNG cargo, slated for delivery on September 25-26, will be sourced from Aramco Trading Singapore at $27.54 per MMBtu. The 50th cargo, due for October 1-2, will be supplied by BP Singapore Pte Ltd at $28.03 per MMBtu, while the 51st cargo, planned for October 5-6, will be acquired from Vitol Asia Pte Ltd, Singapore, at $26.6688 per MMBtu. The committee has endorsed the procurement of these three cargoes at the quoted prices.
Additionally, the CCGP has recommended the purchase of another LNG cargo from Aramco Trading Singapore Pte Ltd at $23.98 per MMBtu. This additional cargo, scheduled for delivery on September 10, 2026, will be procured under Clause 7.2(b) of the Short Term LNG Sale and Purchase Agreement (LNG SPA) between Aramco Trading Singapore Pte Ltd and Petrobangla, marking it as an 'Additional Quantity' under the existing agreement.
These recent approvals underscore Bangladesh's ongoing reliance on imported LNG to bridge the gap in domestic natural gas production and ensure a steady supply to power plants, industries, and other consumers.
