Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has asserted that the government was always in favour of press freedom.
During the discussion on Media Council Bill, 2080, in Legislative Management Committee under the House of Representatives on Monday, Minister Gurung clarified that the government has no intention to curtail press freedom through the bill.
Shedding light on the bill in Committee’s meeting, he stressed that the bill was introduced to make the media sector dignified, systematic and strong.
The Communications Minister mentioned that attempt has been made to regulate, self-regulate, and promote press sector by bringing a separate autonomous body into operation.
“We all have full trust in press freedom. We all have expressed commitment to it. There is no doubt that the Ministry and government are in its favour”, he added.
