Manikganj: State Minister for Water Resources Forhad Hossain Azad announced that the government has initiated a Tk 1,500 crore project aimed at preventing river erosion in Manikganj and improving river management. He made these remarks during a visit to erosion-affected areas in Boruria near the Solar Plant under Shibaloy upazila of the district.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the state minister stated that work on river protection and the re-excavation of rivers and canals will commence from tomorrow. This initiative is expected to alleviate the suffering of residents in erosion-prone areas. The government’s plan includes the re-excavation of 37 rivers and canals in Manikganj. Additionally, Tk 2,600 crore has been set aside for river and canal re-excavation projects in Tangail and Sirajganj.
Forhad Hossain Azad further mentioned that, under the election manifesto of the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, a total of 20,000 kilometers of rivers and canals will be excavated and re-excavated nationwide. The announcement was made in the presence of Manikganj-1 lawmaker SA Jinnah Kabir, Manikganj-2 lawmaker Engineer Moinul Islam Khan Shanto, Manikganj District Council Administrator Advocate Jamilur Rashid Khan, Shibaloy Upazila Nirbahi Officer Monisha Rani Karmaker, and local BNP leaders.
